Ok, down to business. So maybe you've mastered the six step forwards and backwards. Now what? Well, there are a few moves that you can work on that will help you add a little bit of spice and flair to your own personal downrock style.

The first is the purported "12 step," which is really just a series of 4 steps repeated 3 times. What you do is from the starting position in my six-step tutorial, you step with your left foot underneath your right. It should end up about as far away from your right foot as it was. Then you step with your right to return to the same position as you used to be. You should have moved about a quarter turn or so. Then you step with your left OVER your right, with the same spacing as before. Last, you return to your original position one last time.

Basically, this is like the "over and under" or "karaoke" step you all probably did in gym class in junior high, only you do it with your hands on the ground. If you have experience in merengue/salsa, it is very much like that kind of step too (I'm working on choreographing a salsa/breakdancing fusion piece). In addition, the faster you do this step, the better it looks. You want to twist your hips as much as possible, too. Mixing this together with six-step is an easy way to get your downrock looking less amateur and more stylish. Also, to achieve the correct form, make sure that your legs stay fully extended through almost all of this step. Your feet move around in a circle, with your hands basically acting as the pivot point for the circle. Keep moving your hands as much as you need to, otherwise you'll get stuck.

Just like six-step, practice this both directions over and over until it become second nature. Enjoy!

The other addition you can make to your six step starts from the position labeled 4. in my "how to get started" tutorial (http://danceforums.net/viewtopic.php?t=96).

1. First, take your right leg (left leg if you're doing six-step in the opposite direction) and move it so that your right ankle is on top of your left knee (or you can make it look like you're crossing your legs, that's personal preference). At the same time, lift your left hand off the ground (put it on your forehead or whatever you desire).

2. This step is more complicated. You now want to kick your right leg in a clockwise motion up and then around your left leg. At the same time, you want to turn your entire body so that you're facing down. Your right leg should come to rest behind your left knee, with your right toes touching the ground.

3a. Here you can choose one of two options to continue. One option you can do is to complete the turning of your body, spinning all the way over to the position labeled 3. in my six-step tutorial. From here, if you reverse the direction of your six-step, it will really help emphasize this move.

3b. The other option you have is to follow 3a., but as soon as you get there, to whip your left leg (fully extended) in a reverse can-opener motion (can-opener, coffee grind, whatever you want to call it). Something I like to do is to whip it all the way around to return to the six-step starting position, and (*gasp*) go straight into the "salsa" step I talked about in the first paragraph of this tutorial. But that's up to you.

*update* quick video addition here, coffee grind and two step. Two step is hard to explain, so just watch the video if what I says confuses you.

You start in the same position as with the previous move. Then you switch, extending your right leg fully outwards and bringing your left in at the same time.

Then you sweep your right around like a coffee grind, but then you rotate your entire body. This rotations starts by putting your left hand down after your right leg has swept around and is on the left side of your body. Both of your hands should be outside of your right leg. Then put most of your weight on your left hand, and rotate your body backwards over your left shoulder (this is the hard part to describe, just watch the video ;-D). At the same time, jump with your left leg over your right leg, but instead of having it come straight back down like a coffee grind, the combined rotation of your body and the sweeping motion of your right leg should spin your around so that your RIGHT leg lands on the ground, with your left leg kicked outwards, extended just like your starting position. Um, yeah, I know that was confusing. Sorry.

As always, feel free to modify or change any step as you feel fit. It's your style, I'm just giving you a starting block. Now run with it. Enjoy and keep dancing!
